Although its tempting to talk about visiting your son who you haven’t seen in years with the cashier teller at your local grocery store, suppress that urge. You never know who can over hear your conversation and use it against you. Professional thieves will be looking for easy targets, so bragging about your weeklong trip will definitely be a bad idea.
Don’t leave spare keys in an easy to reach place. If you can easily find your key under a mat, or in a hide-a-rock, then a thief would find them quickly as well. It’s best to leave your spare keys with a trusted neighbor or your house sitter, instead of leaving them somewhere for someone else to find.
Be careful with your answering machine message. You shouldn’t leave a message explaining that you are away for the holiday. Instead, leave the traveling plans out of it and simply leave a festive greeting wishing the caller a happy holiday.
Call up your alarm company to let them know that you will be traveling out of town. Let them know how long you will be gone and when you are planning to return. It’s also a good time to give them your contact information so they can reach you in case they need to.
Stay away from advertising for a house sitter publicly. Classifieds are easy targets for crooks. If you can’t find a family member or friend to house sit for you, contact a house sitting company.
When your house sitter is chosen keep them up to date with all information they may need. Let them know your travel arrangements and who may be stopping by during their stay. Give them pictures so they can get familiar with family members, gardening crews, or neighbors that were asked to come by.
Don’t forget the small details. Replace exterior lights and keep them on while you are away. Don’t forget to stop your mail or newspapers and have someone come to mow your lawn if it’s going to be an extended holiday.
