Outdoor Area Rugs Can Spruce Up Your Outdoors

by Mary Parker

When choosing an area rug to compliment your back or front yard, some things to consider are: What are you looking for style-wise in a new rug? Are you going to be putting it on your porch, or will you use it to cover a patch of dirt or grass? You need to determine these things before actually buying your new rug.

Outdoor area rugs should be made of a durable fiber, as well as be resistant to fading and mode and able to stand up withstand rain or other weather. Olafin is a popular fiber for these rugs, as it is sturdy even in the harshest weather and is made of bamboo, making it eco-friendly and resistant to any natural factors that could harm the rug. It is also soil, stain and fade resistant. Synthetic or natural, both fibers are easy to clean and a great choice for an outdoor area rug.

Cost will depend on the materials used, the care put into the construction and the size. Outdoor area rugs made of synthetic fibers such as olafin or polypropylene are typically more affordable than bamboo or those constructed of natural fibers. Handmade as opposed to machine made will also determine the cost. And obviously, the size of the rug will also factor into the costs. If you determine your budget before shopping, you will be able to easily figure out what you can get.

Choosing the color of your outdoor area rug is important as well. Keep in mind that dark colors and hues will make your yard feel more like an indoor area. They will also show less dirt but will absorb heat. A light rug can make an area seem like it is larger, but it will absorb less heat and have to be cleaned more often than those that are dark.

Size is also important. Choose a rug that is just the right size. If the rug is going under a table, it would look best if it extended in diameter from the table by at least a foot. If you are looking for a rug for a room like an enclosed patio or deck, needs to be at least a foot of floor space between the rug and the wall. An outdoor area rug that is too large takes away from the detail and crisp lines or curves the rug should create.

Even in an outdoor setting, area rugs do so much more than just cover the floor. Just as if you were designing the interior of your home, you also must put care and attention into the outside as well. The look of the area can be altered with little expense by just rolling up your outdoor area rug and replacing it with another.
